Little meetings sometimes big
Lots of work
groups, councils, type clubs, and other aviation groups meet at EAA
AirVenture Oshkosh, the epicenter of sport aviation. AirVenture provides
a unique opportunity for grassroots aviators, manufacturers, and local,
state, and federal officials to meet, exchange views and ideas, and work
on collaborative solutions. Most often, these meetings involve groups of
people—sometimes very diverse groups. But EAA’s government advocacy
also works on a one-to-one basis. Read

Committee to address amateur-built
safety
"We are
living in the safest period ever in general aviation and commercial
aviation history," said FAA Associate Administrator Nick Sabatini.
But, he continued, there has been an "uptick" in accidents
involving amateur-built aircraft. In fact, he said, "amateur-built
aircraft are the only group of aircraft whose safety numbers are going
in the wrong direction." Read

Seaplane Base buoys spirit of aviation
"It’s the
Key West of AirVenture," says Paul Seehafer, chairman of the EAA
Seaplane Base, describing the laid-back atmosphere and island-like
surroundings of the base. And it certainly is. After getting let off the
bus, visitors stroll down a winding wooded path, and after a short walk
an opening appears, the oasis of AirVenture. You walk into a
refreshingly cool breeze from Lake Winnebago that is a respite from the
scorching sun and humidity. Read

Women Soar: Amazing women, amazing
time
"Never take
‘no’ for an answer." "If at first you don’t succeed,
try, try again." "Do something you’re passionate
about." Many of these popular sayings were repeated at Women Soar,
a program for female high school students that introduces them to
aviation careers and inspires them to expand their potential. This year
about 80 girls and 25 mentors participated in Women Soar, which occurred
the first two days of EAA AirVenture Oshkosh. Women Soar not only helps
students learn more about aviation, but it also helps them learn more
about themselves and the people around them who are always willing to
help. Read

Goodyear blimp returns to Oshkosh
When the Goodyear
blimp Spirit of Goodyear returned to AirVenture 2008, its support
crew included multi-tasking Mark Keitel. Mark’s business card reads
Senior Radio and TV Technician, Aircraft Mechanic. He’s also a
commercial big-rig driver, which comes in handy when the ground crew
paces the blimp to outlying locations from its home base in Akron, Ohio.

Smith setting records at 16
Errick Smith said
flying an airplane is like riding a bicycle and flying a helicopter is
like riding a unicycle while bouncing a ball. The 16-year-old from Ocean
Spring, Mississippi, should know. Two weeks ago, on July 21, he set a
U.S. record when he became the youngest to solo an airplane and two
helicopters on the same day. Read
