U.S./CANADIAN SECURITY
MEASURES EFFECTIVE IN STOLEN C-172 EPISODE
U.S. and Canadian security measures were put to the test Monday when
they safely and successfully brought a conclusion to a rare incident
involving a stolen aircraft from a Canadian flight school. The
bi-national North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) intercepted
a stolen Cessna 172 crossing the Canada-US border April 6, and escorted
the aircraft until it landed on a dirt road about six hours later in

NEWLYWEDS AROUND THE
WORLD IN AN RV
EAAers Detlef Heun (EAA 771214) and Liliana Tagliamonte (EAA 771215)
departed Lantana Airport (LNA) last week in their newly built RV-7,
beginning a trip that they hope will take them around the world in three
years. Heun and Tagliamonte, who married at their first stop in the
Bahamas, plan to fly to Brazil and then Antarctica. "The most
important part of this whole adventure is meeting people," Heun
said. "We look forward to meeting lots of EAA members and other
aviation and non-aviation people." The around-the-world flight
route will include stops in Greenland, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, India,
Australia, China, Japan, and many other countries before returning to
their starting point in Florida. To learn more about the flight or to
follow their progress, visit their website at www.flight-around-the-world.org.

EARNING HIS WINGS
Flight 18: Stalls, Slow Flight and Landings
"It's
coming back to me!
This week we practiced slow flight,
stalls, an emergency, then came back in for a few touch and go's. The
first two landings weren't too admirable, but the last couple felt
great!
It was just the confidence booster I
needed to remind myself that yes I do remember how to do this. Jason is
talking about "re-soloing" me then we'll be off to do some
cross-countries." -
Brady
Brady
Lane, EAA multimedia journalist, is taking flight lessons in pursuit of
his sport pilot certificate, and he's sharing the experience in real
time on EAA's website, "Earning
My Wings: A Video Blog About Learning to Fly."

HULL INSURANCE COST
COMPARISONS: HOMEBUILT VS. PRODUCTION AIRCRAFT
By Bob Mackey, Representative for the EAA
Aircraft Insurance Plan, Administered by Falcon Insurance Agency
An
EAA member recently asked me the following question: "I've owned
several airplanes, some were production and some were homebuilts. I
found, and it confuses me, insurance costs about twice as much for the
homebuilt compared to the production airplanes, even though the airplane
values are the same. Why is there such a difference?"
There are several reasons why this is often the case. Read

TURN YOUR OLD PARTS INTO
NEW MONEY AT AIRVENTURE
Did
you know that AirVenture provides you the best place to sell those
aircraft parts cluttering up your hangar? AeroMart, the world's largest
aircraft parts swap, lets you turn those old parts into cash while
helping other EAA members complete their projects. AeroMart will have a
new location this year - right next to Camp Scholler - making it easier
for campers transport their excess parts to the AeroMart for
consignment. All you have to do is bring your parts by the AeroMart when
you arrive at AirVenture with the price you're willing to sell. You'll
pay AeroMart $1 per item consigned plus 12 percent of the sale price for
the opportunity to display and sell your goodies at the biggest and best
aviation event on the planet. At the end of AirVenture, stop by to pick
up your proceeds. It's that easy!
AeroMart is an all-volunteer operation
now run by EAA Chapter 252. If you have further questions, or are
looking to volunteer at AeroMart, send an e-mail to EAA252@gmail.com.

chapters. The exhibit will feature chapter patches, chapter logos, or
chapter pins. (Duplicates are okay.) EAA has put out the call to
chapters for these items, which will be considered for display in the
exhibit. Anything not immediately displayed will become a part of the
museum's permanent collection. Please send your contributions to Ron
Twellman, EAA AirVenture Museum, 3000 Poberezny Road, Oshkosh, WI 54902.

EAA 'TIMELESS VOICE OF
THE WEEK': ED RODDY
Ed
Roddy (1919-2009) was a P-47 pilot with the 342nd Fighter Squadron of
the 348th Fighter Group, 5th Air Force during World War II. He flew his
combat missions in the Pacific Theater, where he shot down eight
Japanese aircraft to earn "ace" status. He was later placed in
command of the 58th Fighter Group, and in that capacity had the
distinction of supervising the 201st Fighter Squadron of the Mexican
Expeditionary Air Force. Known as the "Aztec Eagles," the
pilots of the 201st were attached to the 58th Fighter Group and were the
only Mexican pilots to fly in combat during the war. In addition to
serving during World War II, Roddy also flew combat missions during the
Korean War and continued flying during the Cold War with the USSR. He
retired from the Air Force with the rank of Colonel. Sadly, Col. Roddy
passed away this week on April 6th in his hometown of Fresno,
California. Watch

Q
& A:
Question of
the Week
For EAA
Information Services
If a
manufacturer of an S-LSA goes out of business, would
that aircraft then be switched to an E-LSA because
there would no longer be factory support ?
Answer:
The switch does not take place automatically. It is
up to the owner/operator to understand that they
must operate the aircraft in accordance with the
manufacturer’s instructions and in compliance with
any safety directives issued by the manufacturer.
When that manufacturer is no longer in business, and
incapable of issuing safety directives, the
owner/operator is responsible to understand the
aircraft can no longer be flown legally. The FAA
provides an option in this example for owners to
transition their aircraft from the S-LSA category to
the E-LSA category. Once in the E-LSA category the
aircraft can continue to be operated.
