HOUSE VOTE WOULD LIMIT
REACH OF TSA SECURITY DIRECTIVES
Amendment now part of TSA Authorization Act
Sometimes it's as much about how you go about doing business as it is
about what business you do. In the case of the Transportation Security
Administration (TSA) and its issuance of security directives, the
general aviation community hasn't been happy with either the hows or the
whats. The issue has recently come to a head in response to an outcry
from the general aviation community in response to TSA Security
Directive 08F and 08G, which require background checks and badges for
general aviation pilots and aircraft owners operating at airports with
any form of commercial service. Thursday,
however, after an exhaustive and united advocacy effort by numerous
general-aviation groups, the U.S. House of Representatives narrowly
passed (219-211) an amendment to the Transportation Security
Administration Authorization Act that would address the "how"
concerns by reining in TSA's policymaking-by-decree practices. Read

FLYING CAR DEVELOPMENT
ADVANCES
The
Terrafugia Transition flying car reached a significant milestone
recently when its proof-of-concept (POC) roadable light-sport
aircraft completed the first of a four-stage development
process: successfully flight-testing the proof of concept
prototype. After its maiden flight in late March, the airplane
flew 27 more times in Plattsburgh, New York, proving its
validity and prompting test pilot Colonel (Ret.) Phil Meteer to
state, "I would like to keep flying this proof-of-concept
vehicle, but it makes sense to move on to the beta
prototype." The POC will be on static display at Oshkosh
this year, but no flight demos would be made. If you'd
like to see how Transition flies, watch the video. Read

SUFFOLK 2009: THE
VIRGINIA REGIONAL FESTIVAL OF FLIGHT
Fewer
things cause more buzz in the recreational aviation community than the
emergence of a major new fly-in. The Virginia Regional Festival of
Flight - "Suffolk" as it's already being called here on the
mid-Atlantic coast - has in its two years of existence evolved into an
"AirVenture-Light" for this part of the country.
The second Festival of Flight was held
last weekend (May 30-31) at the Suffolk Executive Airport (SFQ), just a
few miles southwest of Norfolk. Its roots lie in the Virginia Regional
EAA Fly-Ins held from 1997-2007 at Dinwiddie County Airport (PTB) in
Petersburg. Read

FLY FOR LIFE: PROFILES IN
CARING
"Fly
For Life" at EAA AirVenture 2009 will recognize and celebrate the
breadth and depth of good works by those who offer aviation services for
the benefit of their fellow citizens of the world. Public Benefit
Aviation (PBA) - volunteer pilots and aviation enthusiasts who
dedicate their time, skills, and
resources to help people; and Mission
Aviation (MA) - Christians working to bring the transforming
message of Jesus Christ to people living in remote, difficult-to-access
places; provide vital humanitarian and spiritual support that would
otherwise go unserved. For more information, visit www.Fly4Life.org.
In our continuing series profiling the
benevolent flying, we feature Robert Cleaves, founder of
the Wilderness Conservancy who flew anti-poaching and medical missions
to remote villages in southern Africa from 1986-96. In 2000 he
began the Conservancy's Project Care, flying humanitarian missions to

Q
& A:
Question of
the Week
For EAA
Information Services
I am about to
have the airworthiness inspection on my Sonex. I
have been putting all my info regarding the building
project, the engine, and the prop in a three-ring
binder. Do I need a logbook for each (airframe,
engine, prop) for the inspection, or is this
optional?
Answer:
It is not a requirement for separate logbooks. All
the FAA requires is referred to as “maintenance
records." You have the option on how you wish
to organize these records.
Have a question?
To ask a question regarding government issues,
e-mail govt@eaa.org.

WIEBES/BELITE AIRCRAFT
ACQUIRES KITFOX LITE RIGHTS
Wichita, Kansas-based aviation enthusiast and entrepreneur James Wiebe
and his wife, Kathy, have acquired the production rights to the Kitfox
Lite, forming a new business entity, Belite Aircraft, to market it. The
airplane will incorporate stronger, lighter carbon fiber components so
that it meets FAR Part 103 weight requirements. Wiebe plans to
incorporate a number of additional modifications into the design that
will improve the airplane's performance and versatility. The Wiebes
acquired the tooling, existing parts, and manufacturing rights to the
aircraft in March of 2009. As a condition of the transaction, they
agreed to re-brand the airplane to prevent any confusion with the
larger, two-place light sport Kitfox that shares many of the same design
features but is owned by another company. Wiebe expects to have an
aircraft on display at AirVenture 2009. Learn
