AOPA
AND EAA SIGN MEMO OF UNDERSTANDING
Aviation groups will support each
other's efforts to promote, protect GA
The
presidents of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) and the
Experimental Aviation Association (EAA) cemented a cooperative agreement
that was first unveiled earlier this year by signing a memorandum of
understanding in the middle of AeroShell Square during EAA's 2009
AirVenture Oshkosh. Under the agreement, both organizations pledged to
support each other's efforts to promote, protect, and expand the general
aviation community. Read

HARRISON FORD SURPRISED TO
RECEIVE FREEDOM OF FLIGHT AWARD
Mention
Harrison Ford and most people think of his movie roles, such as Han Solo
in the "Star Wars" series or Indiana Jones in "Raiders of
the Lost Ark" and its three sequels. But to the hundreds of youth who
have received a free airplane ride with him through EAA's Young Eagles
program, he's just another pilot who is trying to keep the future of
general aviation alive and thriving. Read

LANCASTER BOMBER BRINGS WORLD WAR II TO AIRVENTURE
The
Canadian Warplane Heritage's (CWH) World War II British Lancaster bomber
used several of its precious 50 annual flying hours to reach AirVenture
2009. The bomber is required to be torn down for inspection every 50
hours, and CWH schedulers map out its annual forays accordingly,
explains Laura Hassard-Moran, CWH's flight coordinator. Read

SEE, HEAR ABOUT 'PERFECT
FIREFIGHTING TOOL'
Shake,
rattle, and roll. While those wild gyrations may remind you of the
crooner, Elvis, it's also the same movements that gave the Erickson
S-64F Aircrane Helitanker its nickname. The
heavy-duty, twin-engine rotorcraft, which has gained notoriety for its
superior firefighting capabilities, arrived at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh
2009 on Monday, and will depart on August 2. Read

EAA FOUNDER REUNITED WITH
WWII TRAINER
It’s
not unusual for pilots to imagine what happened to an airplane they once
flew. EAA Founder Paul Poberezny got
the answer regarding one of the myriad airframes he’s piloted. On
Tuesday at EAA AirVenture he was reunited with a Fairchild PT-23 primary
trainer—one of the same PT-23s he used to instruct students at
Thompson Robbins Army Airfield in Helena, Arkansas during World War II. Read

HONORING
EAA'S YOUNG EAGLES VOLUNTEERS
Ron
Shelton does it to see the children and their families enjoying
themselves. Doug Nelson just hopes to hear, “This is the best day of my
life.” Richard Grell still remembers the “spark” that ignited his
love of aviation and wants to give that spark to others. Neita Montague
says she gets a huge “high” every time she comes “down.” Robert
(Butch) Bejna enjoys seeing the children’s reaction when they’re back
on the ground. Read

COX: 'NEVER SAY CAN'T'
Born
without arms, Jessica Cox said she doesn’t have “can’t” in her
vocabulary. “Instead I say I
haven’t figured out yet how to do that.” With that degree of
determination Cox became the first person without arms to earn her
pilot’s certificate back in October 2008.
But it wasn’t easy. Cox, faced with the
first challenge of flight training, was figuring out how to buckle
herself into the four-point seatbelt using her feet. Read

NAFI
ADDS VALUE TO MEMBERSHIP
The National Association of Flight Instructors (NAFI) is adding new
value to memberships by partnering with Pilot Journey and McConnell
Aviation. NAFI’s goal is to represent flight instructors and support
flight instructors’ commitment to professionalism through its code of
ethics.
Pilot Journey will market NAFI member
schools so students will be able to find quality schools easier. Member
schools then have the benefit of reaching a wider audience of
prospective pilots.
McConnell Aviation will provide pilot
supplies and training materials so NAFI member students will have access
to quality pilot kits.
This is the first partnership of its
kind, said Jason Blair, NAFI executive director, stating, “A
partnership of this magnitude will attract even more members to the
association.” The added benefits more than pay for the cost of the
NAFI membership, he added.
Gary Bradshaw of Pilot Journey said, “Consumers
are attracted to organizations that have quality.”
Find out more about the new benefits at
the Learn to Fly Center in EAA Member Square.
AVIDYNE ANNOUNCES NEW
LOWER-COST FMS400 AND ENTEGRA RELEASE 9 CONFIGURATION OPTIONS
Avidyne announced several changes Tuesday, including a new lower-cost
FMS400 flight management system and options for the installation of
Release 9 of the Entegra.
The FMS400 configuration allows Cirrus
owners who do not require full WAAS precision-approach capability to
still be able to use the Entegra Release 9 and FMS functionality. If
desired in the future, it is possible to upgrade the system to include
the WAAS capability.
In addition, Release 9 is available in
three versions. The Silver version includes dual FMS400 displays, a
single ADAHRS, and dual XGA high resolution displays, for $39,500. If
desired, Synthetic Vision can be added when available in the future for
$5,000. The Entegra Gold version includes dual FMS900W WAAS systems in
place of the FMS400 displays, as well as a keyboard and Synthetic
Vision, and will run $59,000. Both of these optional configurations are
expected to be available in September 2009.
Finally, the Platinum version has dual
ADAHRS, retails for $72,800, and is now shipping.
Avidyne has 5,000 Entegra units currently
flying and has filled order slots through the end of August and into
September 2009.

ASPEN AVIONICS
ANNOUNCES FOREIGN APPROVALS, NEW HELICOPTER STCS
Aspen Avionics advanced its line of compact glass-cockpit replacement
equipment and illustrated its energy with a number of announcements
Tuesday at AirVenture.
For example, Aspen announced Brazilian
and Canadian STCs for the installation of Aspen’s Primary Flight
Display (PFD). The Brazilian approval covers 320 aircraft models, while
the Canadian approval covers Diamond’s DA20.
Additionally, the company announced the
release of a new version of the PFD, the EFD 1000H for helicopters.
Priced at $14,995, the new unit contains improved mounting hardware to
help the units withstand the rigors of rotorcraft operations.
Models approved so far include Bell’s
206 Jet Ranger and Long Ranger and the Eurocopter AS350. The EFD 1000H
will be available for delivery in November 2009.
The company continues to develop STCs for
the most popular helicopters in the fleet and plans to announce
availability dates in the near future.
During AirVenture, the company announced
that they are very close to receiving approval on their MFD product.
Approval for the AFD 1000 MFD is expected in September, with deliveries
starting that same month.
Aspen has more than 2,000 display systems
in flight, and noted that with their entry level price their units were
being installed in place of HSIs that are in need of overhaul, since the
price is so competitive.
